in—land brings together the work of Ben Liney, Christine Goerner and Lucy Hersey—three artists whose practices are rooted in a contemplative connection with the Australian landscape. Through painting, photography, and mixed media, each artist offers a quiet, deliberate response to place: a stillness in tone, a restraint in composition, and a reverence for light, texture and form.

Artists

Ben Liney

Ben Liney works on the lands of the Bunurong. Grounded in close observation of the landscape, his practice reflects a quiet attentiveness to the rhythms of the natural world—offering restrained, intimate perspectives shaped by a deep connection to place.

Through oil painting, he explores the untouched beauty of the land, revealing the quiet energy within stillness—an unseen force that shapes both our surroundings and inner worlds. His work reflects on the passage of time, with rock formations standing as silent witnesses to history, holding traces of memory within their surfaces.

Often set against vast, open spaces, these enduring forms are stripped of their surroundings to emphasise their presence and permanence. In isolating these elements, he magnifies their intricate textures and subtle details, inviting contemplation of nature’s quiet endurance. His paintings foster an immersive connection to place—prompting reflection on our relationship with the land, the weight of time, and the delicate ways memory is held in the landscape.

Ben is represented in Sydney by Traffic Jam Galleries.

Christine Goerner

Christine was born and educated in Melbourne, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Graphic Communication from Monash University. After a successful career as an advertising Art Director and Graphic Designer, photography became a passion project. Now Christine is telling stories about places and nature through her photographic art.

Christine ventures into remote places to capture what is beautiful and interesting to her. Then creates art from memories of how these places make her feel – often resembling dreamscapes of nature. Deserts, lakes, rivers and forests become portals to other-worldly places that inspire contemplation and reflection.

Her abstracted landscapes may encourage you to see something you may not have noticed before – like patterns in trees, shapes of watery reflections, the texture of landforms, the mood of an arid landscape or an intense colour palette in nature. She invites you to see the beauty of nature through her eyes.

Her work has been highly-awarded through esteemed local and international art and photographic competitions. She was a finalist in Art Edit magazine’s Self-represented Art Prize and won Best of Show at Malvern Artists Society Gallery.

Christine’s work is held in private collections in Australia, the United States and Europe.

Lucy Hersey

Lucy Hersey creates paintings that are as much of the land; as they are about the local landscape. Using locally collected earth, rocks and clays, she hand makes her own naturally pigmented ‘earth paint’, drawing inspiration from location and materials to create works with significant commitment to process and connection to place.

Lucy has been shortlisted for the Ravenswood Australian Women’s Art Prize and Omnia Prize, and her work and practice has been featured in Channel 9 production ‘Good Chef Hunting’, Country Style Magazine and The Design Files.

As a self-taught painter, Lucy draws on her background in medical research to bring an experimental, yet methodical approach to paint making. Her unique technique draws on the methods of the Old Masters, grinding and hand mulling paint from powdered pigments; whilst considering the cultural and historical significance of colour. Now living as a cattle farmer in regional Victoria, her low-impact art practice is integral to a life that relies on the natural cycles that sustain a life on the land, and honours the landscape she loves and knows intimately, both as a custodian and as an artist.
